The Akosombo Dam located at the South East of Ghana is the major source of hydro power to the country. The dam has a 150 billion cubic storage capacity with a maximum operating level of 276ft.
In the 2023 raining season Ghana experienced excessive rainfall due to climate change which resulted in the dam reaching and exceeding its full levels and capacity. The situation posed high risk to the survival of the dam.
The managers of the dam, Volta River Authority (VRA) took the initiative to mitigate the ultimate risk of losing the dam by spilling the excess water to the lower basin of the Volta lake where the dam resides.
The spillage led to the displacement of over 8,000 people in 8 communities along the Volta River downstream, with Mepe being the most affected. The numbers have since increased to 31,000 as of 19 October 2023.
The situation brought dire consequences on the inhabitants along the lower basin of the river destroying their houses, farm lands and personal belongings.
In view of the above NSIA INSURANCE as part of our Corporate Social Responsibility and alignment with Social Development Goals (No. 2) collaborated with Citi FM foundation by donating several bags of rice worth thousands of Ghana Cedis to the foundation to assist in their efforts to alleviate the plight of numerous citizens affected by the spillage.
